Episode 10
Being Found: SEO, Speed, and AI Answers
In early 2024, a change in how Google generated results dropped several of host Bryan Mills's clients out of search overnight, through no fault of their own. Google fixed it in days, but the week proved the point: one company holds that much of the decision about whether you can be found, and as search leans into AI-generated answers, more of that decision happens before anyone clicks.
This is the season's thesis episode. Search is splitting in two: ranked lists, and the single synthesized answer an assistant composes with a few cited sources. Being cited is becoming as important as being ranked, and the answer engines don't check your ad budget; they check whether your facts are structured, consistent, current, and verifiable.
Bryan covers speed as felt experience, with the three ordinary fixes (oversized images, missing caching, self-inflicted widget weight) that solve most small-site slowness. Then the thin SEO layer that remains once you notice most of yours is already done: page titles in the searcher's words, honest meta descriptions, the submitted sitemap, and Google Search Console, the free rite of passage where you stop guessing about findability, with a worked example of the weekly fifteen-minute report habit. Then GEO, generative engine optimization: becoming the primary source for your own facts, question-shaped content, Schema markup, the crawler decision, and the quarterly search-yourself log.
On the Question Line: an agency cold-calls a nonprofit board with a $1,500-a-month SEO retainer, and we give the board an evidence-based answer, plus a warning about the same pitch now dressed as "AI SEO." In the Tool Minute: PageSpeed Insights.
Quick win: ask three AI assistants who your organization is, log what's wrong, and fix the source.
